Utilizing a multi-faceted approach to providing service, University of Utah Health Security strives to provide the utmost in safety and security for our patients, staff, and visitors. Annually, University of Utah Health Security responds annually to over 75,000 calls for services throughout the network. These calls include medical assists, courtesy escorts, alarm responses, welfare checks, and more.

In support of University of Utah Health's policy toward workplace violence, University of Utah Health Security has implemented strategies for response, case management, vulnerability assessment, training and education.

Since 2017, the division has grown from approximately 30 officers to 164. University of Utah Health Security currently provides services to:

Meet the Team

Glenn Smith

Director

Glenn Smith

Director
Glenn began working for the University of Utah in October of 2017 after retiring from a 25 year career in law enforcement. He held the rank of lieutenant and was appointed to serve as department head in the Mayor's cabinet in South Salt Lake, Utah. As a department head, he was vital in the development of the the Community Connection Program, which aimed to improve the quality of life for residents and businesses utilizing volunteers, donations, and federal block grant money. During his time with University of Utah Health, Glenn has overseen the growth of personnel that has quadrupled in size, and the expansion of University of Utah Health Security into specialty clinics and community health centers.

Chris Snyder

Associate Director
Chris has 28 years of public safety experience, including 23 years in local law enforcement, retiring as Chief of Police in 2014. He is a past recipient of the Utah Chiefs of Police Association Chief of the Year award and has been recognized by the Utah Council on Victims of Crime for his dedication to victim services. Chris is also a graduate of the 239th Session of the FBI National Academy. He has previously managed training and professional standards for the Health Security Division and is a certified Crisis Prevention Institute instructor and workplace violence prevention specialist.

Jennifer Roberts

Jennifer Roberts

Administrative Manager
Jennifer started with University of Utah Health Security in 2019. She has over 18 years of human resources experience, as well as fiscal management experience. Jennifer obtained her certification in Human Resource Management from Michigan State University in 2003. She served in a subcontractor position as a records manager for the United States Army. Jennifer is involved in the onboarding process for new hires in addition to budgeting, purchasing, and serving as a liaison for personnel matters.

Brian McCollum

Logistics Manager
Brian has been with University of Utah Health Security since 2014. He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and was an instructor in nuclear, biological, and chemical warfare. He also worked for 20 years in public safety and security in Las Vegas. Brian had assignments as a K9 handler and training instructor. He also served as an OSHA safety director and as security director for a large casino. He co-manages the largest division within University of Utah Health Security. His responsibilities include hiring, scheduling, alarm audits, and uniformed operations.

Darin Sweeten

Darin Sweeten

Operations Manager
Darin is a law enforcement veteran with 23 years of service at the South Salt Lake Police Department, retiring with the rank of lieutenant. Darin held positions as a training coordinator, SWAT team leader, investigations, and public information officer. Darin also volunteered for 13 years with the Special Olympics Utah as a Liaison for the Law Enforcement Torch Run Program. He served as a Board Member, Deputy Director, and State Director within this organization. Darin manages security teams at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital, Huntsman Mental Health Institute, University Orthopaedic Center, Greenwood Health Center, and Westridge Health Center.

David Kelly

David was born and raised in South Africa where he worked in the hospitality industry for twenty years. This included working for an international cruise line before eventually moving to Florida. He obtained his Firefighter I & II as well as his EMT at Coral Springs Fire Academy. He then worked for the Panama City Fire Department for four years before moving to Salt Lake City where he has been a member of the University of Utah Health Security Team for the past four years.

Matt Erwin

Operations Manager
Matt Erwin has been an integral part of the Health Security Division for four years and currently serves as the Operations Manager at University Medical Center. His extensive background in public safety, including roles such as a uniform supervisor at the main hospital and Security Vulnerability Assessment Team supervisor, has prepared him well for his current responsibilities. Before joining University Health, Matt's career in Law Enforcement in Topeka, Kansas, spanned various specialty assignments, including Patrol, Community Policing, Public Housing, Gang Unit, and Narcotics.

Shawn Roberts

Shawn Roberts

Training Manager
Shawn Roberts is a US Army veteran who retired from a 32-year career in law enforcement. He has extensive experience developing public safety training and is a nationally recognized instructor. He has worked for the Health Security division since April 2023 and oversees training for the security division. His team also co-instructs with Clinical Staff Education in the delivery of Behavioral Response Team training. They also provide training in de-escalation and personal safety for clinical and non-clinical staff.

Dwayne Ruth

Dwayne Ruth

Security Compliance Manager
Dwayne retired in 2022 after serving for over 31 years for the South Salt Lake Police Department.  He began his law enforcement career in 1991 and served in several line-level assigned capacities, including the Salt Lake Area Gang Project, Street Crimes Unit, and SWAT.  He would receive promotions to the rank of Police Sergeant, Police Lieutenant, and Deputy Chief of Police.  He was the Deputy Chief of Police for nearly ten years until his retirement. Dwayne is the UHealth Security Compliance Manager, which includes policy and administrative investigation oversight. 

Cal Kunz

Cal Kunz

Security Investigations Unit
Cal oversees the Security Investigations Unit and the Security Vulnerability Assessment team. He has thirty years of law enforcement experience. Cal served 21 years at the Salt Lake City Police Department, retiring with the rank of lieutenant. Cal held various positions, including bicycle patrol, undercover narcotics detective, Drug Enforcement Agency task force officer, SWAT team, training unit, watch commander, and internal affairs commander. For the last eight years of his law enforcement career, Cal served as a police chief for two agencies, the Ontario (OR) Police Department and the West Wendover (NV) Police Department.
