Utilizing a multi-faceted approach to providing service, University of Utah Health Security strives to provide the utmost in safety and security for our patients, staff, and visitors. Annually, University of Utah Health Security responds annually to over 75,000 calls for services throughout the network. These calls include medical assists, courtesy escorts, alarm responses, welfare checks, and more.

In support of University of Utah Health's policy toward workplace violence, University of Utah Health Security has implemented strategies for response, case management, vulnerability assessment, training and education.

Meet the Leadership Team

Glenn Smith

Director
Glenn joined the University of Utah in October 2017 after retiring from a distinguished 25-year law enforcement career. Rising to the rank of lieutenant, he served as a department head in the Mayor's cabinet for South Salt Lake, Utah, where he played a key role in creating the Community Connection Program, which enhanced the quality of life for residents and businesses through the use of volunteers, donations, and federal block grant funding. Since joining the University of Utah Department of Public Safety, Glenn has overseen a fourfold increase in personnel and led the expansion of Health Security into specialty clinics and community health centers.

Chris Snyder

With 28 years of public safety experience, including 23 years in local law enforcement, Chris retired as Chief of Police in 2014. He has been honored with the Utah Chiefs of Police Association's Chief of the Year award and recognized by the Utah Council on Victims of Crime for his commitment to victim services. Chris is also a graduate of the 239th Session of the FBI National Academy. He has extensive experience managing training and professional standards for the Health Security Division and is a certified Crisis Prevention Institute instructor and workplace violence prevention specialist.

Jennifer Roberts

Jennifer Roberts

Jennifer joined University of Utah Health Security in 2019, bringing over 18 years of experience in human resources and fiscal management. She earned her Human Resource Management certification from Michigan State University in 2003 and previously served as a subcontractor for the United States Army as a records manager. Jennifer plays a vital role in the onboarding process for new hires, manages budgeting and purchasing, and acts as a liaison for personnel matters.

Brian McCollum

Brian has been with University of Utah Health Security since 2014. A United States Marine Corps veteran, he specialized as an instructor in nuclear, biological, and chemical warfare. With 20 years of experience in public safety and security in Las Vegas, Brian was a K9 handler, training instructor, OSHA safety director, and security director for a major casino. He manages recruitment and hiring and provides operational support and guidance.

Darin Sweeten

Darin Sweeten

Operations Manager
Darin is a seasoned law enforcement professional with 23 years of service at the South Salt Lake Police Department, where he retired as a lieutenant. Throughout his career, he has held key roles as a training coordinator, SWAT team leader, investigator, and public information officer. Darin also dedicated 13 years to the Special Olympics Utah, serving as a Liaison for the Law Enforcement Torch Run Program and holding positions as Board Member, Deputy Director, and State Director. Darin oversees security teams at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital, Huntsman Mental Health Institute, and University Orthopaedic Center.

David Kelly

Operations Manager
David was born and raised in South Africa, where he spent 20 years in the hospitality industry, including working for an international cruise line. After relocating to Florida, he earned his Firefighter I & II and EMT certifications from Coral Springs Fire Academy. David then served with the Panama City Fire Department for four years before moving to Salt Lake City. For the past four years, he has been a dedicated University of Utah Health Security Division member and manages security teams in multiple community health centers.

Matt has been a vital member of the Health Security Division for four years and currently serves as an Operations Manager at the University Medical Center. His broad experience in public safety, including roles as a uniform supervisor at the main hospital and Security Vulnerability Assessment Team supervisor, has equipped him well for his current position. Before joining University Health, Matt had a diverse law enforcement career in Topeka, Kansas, where he took on specialty assignments in Patrol, Community Policing, Public Housing, the Gang Unit, and Narcotics.

Brandon Bryant is a seasoned security professional with 16 years of experience in healthcare and private-sector security. He most recently led Health Security's Training Unit, developing advanced programs and promoting a culture of excellence. Brandon has specialized in asset protection, crisis intervention, and strategic security operations, holding multiple security and crisis response certifications. He is dedicated to enhancing safety and security standards in the healthcare industry.

Shawn Roberts

Shawn Roberts

Training Manager
Shawn, a US Army veteran, retired after a distinguished 32-year career in law enforcement. He is a nationally recognized instructor with extensive experience in developing public safety training. Since joining the Health Security division in April 2023, Shawn has overseen training for the security team, collaborating with Clinical Staff Education to deliver Behavioral Response Team training. His team also provides de-escalation and personal safety training for clinical and non-clinical staff.

Dwayne Ruth

Dwayne retired in 2022 after a 31-year career with the South Salt Lake Police Department. Starting in 1991, he served in various frontline roles, including the Salt Lake Area Gang Project, Street Crimes Unit, and SWAT. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, earning promotions to Police Sergeant, Police Lieutenant, and ultimately, Deputy Chief of Police—a position he held for nearly a decade before retiring. Now, as the UHealth Security Compliance Manager, Dwayne oversees employee performance tracking, policy and administrative investigations.

Cal Kunz

Cal Kunz

Specialized Services Manager
Cal oversees the Security Investigations Unit, Security Vulnerability Assessment team, and visitor management. He has thirty years of law enforcement experience. Cal served 21 years at the Salt Lake City Police Department, retiring as lieutenant. Cal held various positions, including bicycle patrol, undercover narcotics detective, Drug Enforcement Agency task force officer, SWAT team, training unit, watch commander, and internal affairs commander. For the last eight years of his law enforcement career, Cal served as a police chief for two agencies, the Ontario (OR) Police Department and the West Wendover (NV) Police Department.
